Police and the US media reported Wednesday that two people were found dead after an hour-long hostage situation in a doctor’s office in Texas.
The Austin drama began Tuesday afternoon and lasted more than five hours. It was not immediately known how many people were taken hostage or who did it.
A special police unit used a megaphone to communicate with the hostage taker.
“Your life is very important to me,” said a member of the SWAT team over the loudspeaker, according to the Austin American-Statesman newspaper. “And I know that life is very important to you.”
Police first sent a robot and then had members of the SWAT team go to the doctor’s office, where they found two bodies.
“The SWAT situation is over. Two people have been found and pronounced dead,” Austin police tweeted late Tuesday evening. There were no details on the incident and said more information would be made available on Wednesday.
It was not immediately known whether the two people whose bodies were found were the only ones involved in the hostage situation, the newspaper said.
The language used by the SWAT team negotiators – audible outside of the doctor’s office – suggested that a doctor in Austin was one of the hostages and the hostage taker was another doctor, the newspaper reported.
“You don’t deserve to go through this … for everything you’ve done for others … so I want to help you work this through. You have saved many lives,” one hostage-taker was heard said, the newspaper said .
