Eight people were shot dead near a bus and subway station in Philadelphia in a daytime attack Wednesday. One person was in critical condition and seven others were injured.
The shooting took place shortly before 3 p.m. ET (2000 GMT) near the Olney Transportation Center in the Fern Rock neighborhood of north Philadelphia, police said. The victims are between 17 and 71 years old, the police said.
One person is in custody, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a brief press conference on site. However, information about the suspect was not immediately available and no motive was known.
A 71-year-old man was shot in the stomach and in both legs, police said. He is listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
Police initially said seven people had been shot but updated their information after learning that an eighth person with a “gunshot wound in the stomach” walked from the scene to a nearby medical center.
The other victims also suffered wounds that ranged from a bullet to gunshots in the legs, arms and ankles, Outlaw said. According to the police, no further information about the wounded was available except under stable conditions.
Two guns were recovered at the scene and at least 18 cartridge cases were on the street, the police said.
“We’re still putting all the pieces together, but that was a very bold incident,” she said.
Police have asked witnesses to the shooting to report and are looking for other possible suspects.
