Ajinkya Rahane feels the “emptiness” of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the US Open 2020. Both Federer and Nadal will not play the third Grand Slam of the year. 2019 men’s singles champion Nadal withdrew over fears about the coronavirus and the ‘barbaric’ new tennis calendar, while Federer, who underwent two knee surgeries this year, had announced that he won’t be playing again until next year. “Absolutely feeling the emptiness of @rogerfederer, @RafaelNadal or an audience that is not part of the #USOpen. But that doesn’t take away from the excitement. Are you excited? Who are you rooting for this season? Rahane tweeted.

The US Open is being played behind closed doors due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, especially New York, which was one of the hardest hit states.

However, former champion Novak Djokovic is playing and recorded a straight sets victory over Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina in an empty Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Canadian Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 women’s singles winner, has also withdrawn.

For Rahane, the next assignment is 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he will play for Delhi Capitals.

A top-tier batsman for his previous IPL teams, Rahane has expressed his willingness to play the finisher’s role in a top-heavy line-up in Delhi.

Delhi has Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan as lead-off hitters and recently replaced the injured Jason Roy with Daniel Sams from Australia.

The IPL will start in the UAE from September 19.
