The Alaska Congressman who once ridiculed the severity of the novel coronavirus and labeled it the “beer virus” said Thursday he was now infected with it.
Rep Don Young’s announcement came as the state governor warned Thursday that the rapid spread of the virus in Alaska could overwhelm health and public safety systems.
Young, the 87-year-old Republican who is Alaska’s only member of the US House of Representatives, announced this on Twitter.
“I have tested positive for COVID-19. I feel strong, follow the correct protocols, work from home in Alaska and ask for privacy at this point,” he said on the Twitter post.
Young, who was just re-elected into his 25th term and is the longest-serving member of Congress, said in March that concerns about COVID-19 were “primarily driven by hysteria”.
“I call it the beer virus. How do you like it?” he said in a March speech at a senior center in Palmer, Alaska, in a derisive reference to Corona beer. “Anyway, it attacks us seniors. I am one of you. I still say we have to as a nation, as a state, to continue our day-to-day activities.”
Governor Mike Dunleavy posted an emergency text on state cell phones on Thursday with a link to a video warning of “escalating” COVID-19 cases.
“No matter what you think about the virus, the facts are the facts. Hospitalizations and sick healthcare workers are reaching unsustainable levels,” the Republican governor said in a video.
