The grand finale of Kaun Banega Crorepati season 12 it was special in its own way: it was dedicated to Kargil’s war heroes. The finale, broadcast a couple of days ago on Republic Day, features the host Amitabh bachchan remembering the spirit, courage and sacrifice of the brave hearts of the Indian Army with Param Vir Chakra, which is India’s highest military decoration for valor in war, award-winning Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav and Subedar Sanjay Kumar. The expert in tonight’s episode was also a Shaurya Chakra recipient: Colonel Vembu Shankar. Major Yogendra Singh Yadav and Sanjay Kumar displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion during the Kargil War in 1999. The amount earned in tonight’s episode – Rs 25,00,000 – was donated to the Army Battle Victims Welfare Fund.
Subedar’s elder Yogendra Singh Yadav, on the show, recalled how he fought during the Battle of Tiger Hill, and how difficult it was to see his fellow soldiers sacrifice their lives for the nation. He revealed that the enemies shot him several times in the arm and leg, but that he was determined to live to save other soldiers, so he threw a grenade that he had with him at the Pakistani forces. Other soldiers in his platoon were martyred in the line of duty. After Subedar’s eldest Yogendra Singh Yadav was taken back to base camp, he was transferred to Srinagar and then to Delhi, where he underwent treatment for almost 16 months.
Subedar Sanjay Kumar shared that while leading his team to capture Area Flat Top in the Mushkoh Valley in Ladakh during the Kargil War, they were surrounded by Pakistani troops. Enemies fired at him continuously, but he fought valiantly with Pakistani soldiers even after sustaining serious injuries. India defeated Pakistan and captured Area Flat Top during the war.
Subedar Elder Yogendra Singh Yadav and Subedar Sanjay Kumar received the Param Vir Chakra for their bravery during the Kargil war. Kargil’s heroes Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, also awarded the Param Vir Chakra, were martyred during the war in 1999.
