Ajinkya Rahane, India’s stand-in skipper in the absence of Virat Kohli, hit his 12th hundred in the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. Rahane came on strike in the 22nd when Pat Cummins was in the middle of a fiery spell, throwing nine overs on the trot. The India captain weathered the storm and played a gritty knock to get the visitors past the 195 score in Australia’s first innings and into a comfortable position in the second Test of the four-game series.
Rahane hit 11 boundaries on the way to his 195-ball century.
He initially stabilized the innings after India lost Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara in quick succession.
Rahane added 52 runs with Hanuma Vihari for the fourth wicket. Nathan Lyon broke off the partnership by removing Vihari for 21.
Rishabh Pant then joined the skipper in the middle and flights started to come quickly for India.
Pant scored 29 runs from 40 deliveries using three limits before being fired by Mitchell Starc.
Rahane then entered into a 100-plus partnership with Ravindra Jadeja to take India’s lead after 50.
For Australia, Starc and Cummins both took two wickets each, while Lyon also cooperated with a wicket. But Adelaide star Josh Hazlewood remained wicketless in the running second test.
