Mohammed Sameer, Mohammed Siraj’s brother, expressed his delight after the pacemaker delivered a sparkling performance in the Boxing Day test against Australia and played a key role in India’s victory. India put in an all-round performance in the second Test against Australia to take an eight-wicket victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Tuesday. Siraj played a critical role in keeping the Australian batters under control as the Indians kept their foot on the pedal and didn’t let the Aussie tail wag.
Siraj, who made his debut in the game, picked two wickets in the first innings and three in the second innings.
“I am very happy, he did a great performance with five wickets, combined in both innings and that also in his debut game. So it’s a very big performance,” Sameer told ANI.
The victory not only brings India back in the series, but also one step closer to the World Test Championship final.
Riding the back of a brilliant collaboration between Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja on day three, India first sacked Australia for 200 and then came back to chase the 70 goal in just 15.5 overs on day four. If one session had cost India the first Test, it was another session – which Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja endured on day two – in which India held the second game.
However, the win was not as easy as it seemed on paper. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc gave Australia the early wickets to ensure that the win would not be a breeze for the visitors.
Starc dismissed Mayank while Cummins sent Pujara back when a small target looked slightly larger. However, some assured stroke play from Gill and Rahane calmed nerves in the Indian dressing room as the visitors booked an elaborate 8-wicket win.
