Ravindra Jadeja avoided “calamity” when he managed to get a fine catch at Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling alley to send Matthew Wade back to the pavilion in Saturday’s ongoing second Test match. Ashwin, over in the 13th, defeated Wade in flight when the Australian opener missed a high shot. Shubman Gill and Jadeja both went looking for the catch and bumped into each other, but luckily for India, Jadeja managed to hold on to the catch.
Cricket Australia took to Twitter to share the video of the catch, captioning it “Nearly a disaster! But Jadeja held out and held the catch!”
Earlier on Day 1, Australian skipper Tim Paine won the toss and chose to hit the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Indian bowlers found their line and height from the start when Jasprit Bumrah came over in his third to pack Joe Burns for a duck.
Wade kept playing his shots, but as soon as Ajinkya Rahane brought in Ashwin, the left-handed batsman looked a little dodgy in his approach.
Ashwin removed Wade and in his following got over the big wicket from Steve Smith, the number one ranked Test batsman, for a duck.
India ended the first session at the top, limiting the number of hosts at lunch time to 65 for three.
Australia, which led the series of four games 1-0, has drafted an unchanged XI. On the other hand, India has made a total of four changes.
