AUS vs IND: Shardul Thakur likely to replace injured Umesh Yadav in Sydney test, report says

Indian team management is likely to choose Shardul Thakur over Thangarasu Natarajan in the third test against Australia over injured Umesh Yadav. According to sources, senior pacemaker Yadav is going home for rehab after also being excluded from the fourth and final test in Brisbane. The third test starts from January 7 in Sydney.


“While people are excited about T Natarajan’s brilliant progress, we shouldn’t forget that he only played one first-class match for Tamil Nadu. And Shardul is a seasoned domestic red ball spacer for Mumbai,” said a BCCI source. the developments in Australia, PTI told Thursday.

“Shardul was really unhappy that his Test debut against the West Indies ended abruptly due to an injury, even before he could throw one over. He has good form and could replace Umesh in the playing XI,” added the source.

The final call will be answered by head coach Ravi Shastri, deputy skipper Ajinkya Rahane and bowling coach Bharat Arun upon arrival in Sydney.

Shardul has played 62 premier games so far and has 206 wickets to show for his efforts.

Another aspect that India would like to discuss ahead of the third test is a long tail that has affected the team.

Shardul has six half centuries of first division and during his time with the national team in white ball games, he has proven to be a decent batsman.

“It is clear that the upcoming training sessions will be important and therefore the final call will probably take place in Sydney,” the source said.


As for Yadav, he is expected to attend National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for an extensive rehab program.

The 33-year-old had limped off the field after an injury during the third day of Boxing Day
