The president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Nazmul Hassan, lashed out at skipper Mominul Haque and coach Russell Domingo after the West Indies won the test series 2-0 on Sunday. Rahkeem Cornwall scalped four, while Jomel Warrican and Kraigg Braithwaite each took three wickets to bundle Bangladesh in the second test and win the match by 17 runs at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday. Last week, Soumya Sarkar had replaced injured Shakib Al Hasan for the second Test against the West Indies. Hassan was not happy with this decision and slapped the coach and skipper for choosing Sarkar for the second test.
“When Shakib was injured, I had [board directors] Akram [Khan] [Khaled Mahmud] Sujon, [Ismail Haider] Mallick, [chief selector Minhajul Abedin] Nannu and [selector Habibul Bashar] Sumon for me, ”ESPNcricinfo quoted Hassan.
‘I gave them four or five options. My first choice was Mahmudullah Riyad, then Mosaddek [Hossain], Mahedi [Hasan] and the fourth option was Soumya [Sarkar]Them [captain Haque and coach Russell Domingo] selected Soumya, ‘he added.
Bangladesh skipper Haque said the hosts needed an all-rounder instead of Shakib and defended his decision to select Sarkar for the second test.
“Shakib bhai’s absence messed up our combination. I needed a batsman who could bowl at an average pace,” said Haque.
“I went with Soumya because he is an experienced player and recently started playing ODIs. These things come up when you lose a match, and it would have been a different story if we had won,” he added.
BCB chief Hassan said Haque and Domingo insisted they only have one choice (Sarkar) and did not mention any other names.
“I still went ahead and personally called Mahmudullah, who told me he had back pain. Mosaddek was in Abu Dhabi. We tried, but she [Haque and Domingo] only had one choice. They didn’t mention any other names, ”Hassan said.
Bangladesh failed to chase the goal of 231 on the fourth day of the second test. After the win, West Indies secured the series 2-0.
