Wilmington, United States:

President-elect Joe Biden said Monday that the people appointed by Donald Trump to the Pentagon had stalled in the transition, warning that the United States would face security risks as a result.

After he and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris were briefed on national security by their transition teams, Biden said political officials from the Pentagon and the Bureau of Administration and Budget had set up “roadblocks”.

“At the moment we are simply not getting all of the information we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas,” said Biden after the briefing.

“In my opinion, it’s nothing less than irresponsibility.”

Biden said he was seeking a “clear picture” of the attitude of US forces around the world from the outgoing administration.

“We need a thorough look at the current budget planning by the Department of Defense and other agencies to avoid the confusion and catch-up that our opponents may be trying to exploit,” said Biden.

Trump has refused to allow the November 3 election, which Biden won with around seven million votes and with 306 to 232 votes in the state electoral college. The President has made unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud.

The Trump administration has raised concern by shaking up Pentagon leadership since the election, including sacked Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who distanced himself from the president’s use of violence against unarmed anti-racism protesters earlier this year.

Trump’s new acting Secretary of Defense, Chris Miller, said the outgoing administration had agreed with Biden’s people to suspend briefings for the holiday season, a claim the incoming team said was untrue.

Trump’s last-minute installation of loyalists at the Pentagon comes amid high tensions with Iran that Trump has blamed for a rocket attack on the U.S. embassy in Iraq ahead of the anniversary of the murder of a top Iranian general in Baghdad in January.
