Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of Donald Trump who has noticeably refrained from recognizing Joe Biden’s victory in the US President’s race, will be said to “congratulate whoever is elected” when “the time is right,” he said Vice President on Monday.
Bolsonaro, a far-right politician sometimes referred to as a “tropical trump card”, is among the few world leaders who fail to congratulate Biden after he was declared last week’s election winner – a fact shared by opponents of the Brazilian leader was criticized.
Regarding Trump’s allegations that the vote was compromised by widespread “fraud”, Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourao said Bolsonaro was waiting for these allegations to be resolved.
“I think the president is waiting for this whole mess to end, the argument about whether or not there were wrong votes, before commenting,” Mourao said.
“When the time is right, he will send Brazil’s congratulations to whoever is elected,” he added, without mentioning Biden’s name.
Trump claims the election was “rigged” despite lacking concrete evidence, and analysts say he will have difficulty taking his case to court.
Bolsonaro, who was elected in 2018, openly approved Trump’s re-election offer in a break with Brazilian diplomatic tradition.
True to the style of confrontation he shares with Trump, he also clashed with Biden when the latter said during the campaign that the United States should urge Brazil to better protect the Amazon rainforest.
Bolsonaro, who led a wave of deforestation and forest fires in the largest rainforest in the world, replied that the statement was “catastrophic and unnecessary”.
