London, United Kingdom:

Britain’s Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was hospitalized in London overnight as a “precaution,” Buckingham Palace said on Wednesday.

The 99-year-old was rushed to the private King Edward VII Hospital on Tuesday night, the palace said, adding it was “a precautionary measure taken on the advice of HRH Doctor” after the prince felt uncomfortable.

The Duke of Edinburgh “is expected to stay in the hospital for a few days to be watched and rested,” the statement said.

The Prince and Queen, 94, followed social distancing rules at Windsor Castle because their age puts them at risk from Covid.

The couple received their first doses of vaccinations in January, the palace said in a rare public comment on the royal couple’s private health issues.

Prince Philip retired from public service in 2017 at the age of 96 after a two-day hospital stay due to an infection. He then had hip surgery in 2018.

In January 2019, he was unharmed after his vehicle was involved in a traffic accident that injured two people near the monarch’s Sandringham estate in east England.

Philip stayed at King Edward Hospital for four nights in December 2019, where he was being treated for a condition known as “pre-existing”. Although he was released on Christmas Eve that year, he has not been seen publicly since.

The recent hospitalization renewed concerns about Philip’s health ahead of his 100th birthday in June this year.
