UK counter-terrorism police arrested two men Monday after a “security threat” aboard a Ryanair flight that resulted in jets being messed up for interception.
Police said they arrested the couple, a 34-year-old man from Kuwait and a 48-year-old man from Italy, late Sunday at Stansted Airport after landing at Vienna Airport under terrorism laws.
The UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF) said it launched two Typhoon fighter planes from a base in nearby Lincolnshire “to intercept a civilian aircraft”.
“The plane was brought safely to Stansted,” it added.
A spokesman for the low-cost airline Ryanair said the aircraft’s crew had been made aware of a “potential security threat on board”.
“In accordance with the procedures, the captain informed the UK authorities and proceeded to London Stansted, where the aircraft landed normally and taxied to a remote stand where passengers could safely disembark,” the airline said.
“Passengers in London Stansted waiting to leave for Vienna were transferred to a replacement plane to minimize the delay in their flight.”
Police said the investigation was still ongoing.
