London, United Kingdom:
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is self-isolating after someone he has been in contact with tests positive for the Covid-19 virus, a spokesman said on Sunday.
“He will continue to work on Downing Street leading the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic,” the Downing Street spokesman added.
Johnson was hospitalized with coronavirus in April. This time, “the prime minister is fine and has no symptoms of COVID-19,” the spokesman said.
The prime minister was informed to self-isolate after being contacted by the country’s Test and Trace program.
The announcement came after Johnson met a small group of MPs on Downing Street Thursday, including one who later developed symptoms of Covid-19 and has now tested positive.
Johnson, 56, got Covid-19 and was admitted to intensive care where he spent three nights in April. The hospital staff were later credited with saving his life.
The UK leader has said that his coronavirus case was seriously made worse by being overweight, but that he had lost 12 pounds since then.
“I’m going to continue this diet because you have to look for the hero in you in the hope that this person will be a lot leaner,” he joked last month.
The UK was the worst hit country in Europe by the pandemic, recording over 50,000 deaths from around 1.2 million positive cases.
