Sinovac Biotech announced on Saturday that its unit’s COVID-19 vaccine has been officially approved for the general public by China’s medical device regulator.

It is the second COVID-19 vaccine to get the green light for public use in China after a shot was approved in December that was developed by a Beijing institute affiliated with the state-run China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm).

Prior to approval, both vaccines were used as part of China’s vaccination program, which is primarily aimed at key groups at higher risk of exposure to the virus.

Indonesia, Turkey, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Laos have issued emergency clearances for the CoronaVac vaccine developed by Sinovac Life Sciences, Sinovac said in a press release.

The approval is based on the two-month results of late-stage clinical trials overseas, from which final analytical data are not yet available, Sinovac said.
