China declined to congratulate Joe Biden as the winner of the US presidential election on Monday, as the outcome of the vote remains to be determined.
While incumbent Donald Trump has not yet conceded and initiated several legal challenges, many world leaders congratulated Biden and her counterpart Kamala Harris after the Democrats were declared winners over the weekend and spontaneous celebrations erupted in American cities .
Trump’s four years in the White House were marked by an expensive trade war and increasingly icy relations with China. The two powers are fighting over areas ranging from guilt for the Covid-19 pandemic to Beijing’s human rights record in Xinjiang and Hong Kong.
China – among a handful of key countries including Russia and Mexico that did not congratulate the elected president – said Monday it had “noticed that Mr Biden has declared he was the winner”.
“Our understanding is that the outcome of the election will be determined in accordance with US law and procedures,” State Department spokesman Wang Wenbin told the press at a regular press conference.
After Wang refused to acknowledge Biden’s victory despite repeated questions from reporters, he said, “We hope the new US administration can hit China halfway.”
Trump has refused to admit defeat and complained in a tweet on Sunday: “Since when has the Lamestream media been calling who our next president will be?”
