A man in China climbed a power pole to do sit-ups from above, impress viewers and power thousands of households, the media said on Tuesday.

The nameless man was taken away by police after his antics on Sunday evening on the outskirts of southwestern Chengdu, the People’s Daily said.

A video was posted on Twitter-like Weibo showing the man hovering about 10 meters in the air while doing a stomach crunch from the top of the pylon.

“The local energy company has initiated an emergency power outage … affecting tens of thousands of households,” said the People’s Daily.

Emergency services, including medical personnel, were on site, The Paper said in Shanghai.

It wasn’t clear why the man chose to do sit-ups off the shelf, but the state media warned of anyone copying him.

“The man’s behavior is too dangerous!” said an outlet.

The incident was a hot topic on Chinese social media, with at least 1.7 million hashtag views.

“I was upset because there was no power … and when I see the news and know the reason, I’m both upset and amused at the same time,” said a Weibo user affected by the bizarre incident.

Another on Weibo didn’t think it was that funny.

“Power outages can waste a lot of money and potentially lead to a fatal accident,” they said.

Local police were unavailable for comment.
