A mass rollout of a COVID-19 vaccine in the UK could be completed in just three months, according to the Times, citing government scientists.
Scientists working on Oxford’s vaccines are hoping regulators will approve them before early 2021, the newspaper said.
A full COVID-19 vaccination program that would exclude children could be faster than experts predicted, the Times said, adding that health officials estimate that any adult could get a dose of the vaccine within six months.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced on Thursday that it had started reviewing real-time data on the potential COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca and Oxford University. This is the first of those steps aimed at expediting the approval process for a vaccine in the region.
The news of the European review also increases the likelihood that the UK vaccine, which has pioneered a successful vaccine against COVID-19, will be the first to be approved in Europe for the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, which has killed more people than one million people worldwide.
The Times report added that plans under government scrutiny include allowing the vaccine to be administered by a much larger group of health care workers, setting up drive-through vaccination centers, and recruiting aid from the armed forces.
