U.S. President Donald Trump, who attended his final Group of 20 summit on Saturday, left a special side conference devoted to the coronavirus pandemic and was later spotted on his golf course outside Washington.
It has been unclear all week whether Trump would even be in attendance for the G20 of the year, largely due in practice to the coronavirus pandemic.
Just 13 minutes after the summit began, Trump sent tweets focusing on his efforts to discard the US presidential election results.
At 10 a.m. Eastern Time, the President had left the White House on his way to his golf club of the same name outside Washington DC.
He was there when the “pandemic preparation side event” began with comments from French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and several other world leaders. Trump did not attend.
He is due to attend another G20 meeting on Sunday morning, according to the White House schedule. But this is likely the last time Trump will hold a summit with other world leaders towards the end of his presidency.
CNN reported that Trump’s impact on the global stage is at a low level after losing the election. Most of the other G20 leaders have congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on his victory, with one notable exception for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Trump had “discussed with other world leaders the need to work together to restore strong economic growth and jobs if we are to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic”.
“During his remarks, President Trump highlighted how the United States was assembling all the resources at its disposal to respond to the crisis, as well as the United States’ unprecedented economic recovery based on tax and regulatory cuts, energy independence and fair trade deals “said the spokeswoman in a statement.
“He spoke about the aggressive measures and security measures the United States has taken to protect the compromised, pioneering treatments and develop record-breaking vaccines and therapies that will save millions of lives. President Trump also reiterated the importance of the G20 working together for future economic growth and prosperity, “she added.
