Dubai airports and GMR Hyderabad reach agreement to help with vaccine distribution

Dubai, January 4 (Reuters) – Dubai airports and Hyderabad airport operator GMR Hyderabad have reached a logistics agreement for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to process up to 300 tons of vaccine per day, the companies said Monday.

The vaccine corridor between Dubai and Hyderabad connects major vaccine manufacturers in India with markets around the world through the cargo hub at Dubai International Airport.

“A sharp increase in demand for efficient, safe and reliable global distribution of large volumes of COVID-19 vaccines is expected in the coming months,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.

“We wanted to be ready to meet and respond to this demand.”

Hyderabad is the emerging vaccine capital of the world, with five major vaccine producers nearby.

India, which has the second highest number of coronavirus infections in the world, approved two emergency-use coronavirus vaccines on Sunday – one developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, the other by the local company Bharat Biotech.
