A boat parade in support of US President Donald Trump overcrowded Lake Travis, Texas on Saturday, creating waves and choppy water that caused at least four boats to sink and others to crash into rocks.
“That was an extraordinary number of boats,” said Kristen Dark, information officer for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, whose deputies patrol the lake. “Some of the boats have sunk.”
Lake Travis is a reservoir on the Colorado River that is a popular spot for boating, fishing, swimming, and other recreational activities.
Dark said additional officers were deployed as the “Lake Travis Trump Boat Parade” was expected to increase the number of ships on the water, but they still received a large number of distress calls.
“When they all started moving at once, it created guards,” said Dark.
The event was advertised on Facebook and called for the participation of boats “of all shapes and sizes” and owners to “decorate their ships in patriotic colors and hoist as many Trump flags as possible”.
Despite the incidents, no injuries or medical emergencies were reported, said Christa Stedman, a spokeswoman for Austin-Travis County Ambulance Services.
