Facebook Inc said Wednesday it would temporarily reduce the political content that appears on New Feeds for some users in Canada, Brazil and Indonesia this week and in the US in the coming weeks.
Board chairman Mark Zuckerberg said in January that he wanted to “lower” the temperature of political conversations on the social networking site because “people don’t want politics and struggles to take over their experiences with our services.”
The world‘s largest social network, which has faltered due to insufficient measures to remove hateful content from the platform, announced last month that it would no longer recommend citizens and political groups to users.
Reducing the frequency of political content marks first steps to explore different ways in which such content can be ranked and understood in people’s feeds with different signals and their preferences, the company said in a blog post.
Facebook will exempt content from official government agencies and services as well as COVID-19 information from health organizations from the exercise.
