Final World Test Championships postponed, start June 18: report

The final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) will now be played from June 18-22 with June 23 as a spare day. The decision maker was originally supposed to take place from June 10-14 at Lord’s Cricket Ground. ANI has reliably learned that it was done taking into account the closeness between the WTC Final and the Finals of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League – the dates have yet to be officially announced – and any quarantine period that players may have to go through in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is almost certain that India will participate in the final.

Currently, India and New Zealand are in the top two places in the WTC rankings. Virat Kohli’s team has 430 points after playing five series, while New Zealand has 420 points after playing five series.

India will play another series against England as part of WTC and Australia, who are in third place, will take on South Africa. Australia would have to beat South Africa if Tim Paine and his boys are to make it to the WTC final.

Last year, the ICC decided to change the WTC points system because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The WTC table has now been revised to rank teams based on the percentage of points earned from the series played, which means that teams are ranked in order of percentage points scored.

Earlier in the day, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Monday that England will start their home international summer with a two-game test series against New Zealand, starting June 2.

Joe Root’s team will host the number one ranked Test side New Zealand for two Test matches at Lord’s (June 2-6) and Edgbaston (June 10-14).

The Test Championship is not only a project close to the ICC’s heart, even stars like Kohli have made it clear how it is an integral part of the system, and winning it would be the ultimate icing on the cake.

“I think Test Championship, as an ICC tournament, should be at the top of that. All other tournaments, for me, start below that. This is going to be the biggest of all. We want those points and make sure we qualify as early as possible, and be in that frame of mind to hopefully win that, ”he had said.
