Wednesday night’s matchup between Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic challenger Senator Kamala Harris opened without the fireworks display that tarnished the chaotic debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden last week. But Trump’s COVID-19 infection and his and Biden’s advanced ages make this perhaps the most momentous debate the U.S. Vice President has ever remembered.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Coloring within the lines
After the chaotic, insulting debate between Biden and Trump last week, presenter Susan Page warned both candidates that she would strictly enforce the rules of decency
“We want a lively debate
But Americans also deserve a civil discussion, “she said
Both candidates showed their best behavior from the start and finalized their statements when they were warned by Page: “Senator Harris, it is a privilege to be on the stage with you,” said Pence – after Harris said the coronavirus -The Trump administration replied: “The greatest failure of a presidential administration in the history of our country.”
Dinging Bident on Plagarism
Candidates usually show up with a quiver of prepared one-liners, and Pence lost one prematurely
He accused Biden of copying the Trump administration’s plan to fight the coronavirus and accused plagiarism that helped end Biden’s first presidential campaign in 1988. “It looks a bit like plagiarism that Joe Biden knows a little about.” he said.
In 2008, when he was Barack Obama’s fellow campaigner, Biden said that “no one decides who to vote on based on the vice president.” However, this debate is of paramount importance
Biden, 77, would be the oldest president in the United States
Story if he won the election, and he has hinted that he could possibly only serve one term. Trump, who was only slightly younger at 74, spent the weekend in a military hospital outside Washington after contracting the novel coronavirus. From a purely actuarial standpoint, Pence, 61-year-old and 55-year-old Harris, would be more likely to join the presidency than any other vice-presidential candidate
That will surely be an important subtext on Wednesday evening
Pence also carries an additional burden as he was hired to campaign for the ticket as Trump is out due to his COVID-19 infection
Barriers and masks
Campaigns focused on every benefit often battle over everything from the format of the debate to the height of the podium. This time, they were at odds over coronavirus protection
During the debate phase in Salt Lake City, there will be a plexiglass barrier between the two candidates installed over the objection of Pence’s aides
They will also be more than 3.6 m apart on stage. The organizers of the debut handed out salmon-colored masks to all panelists and cordoned off alternate rows in the theater where the debate to promote social distancing will take place – a powerful reminder that opinion polls show that the most important issue for voters is the coronavirus and traditional Concerns as the economy and national security outweigh
Pence has led the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force as the pandemic killed more than 210,000 Americans and shut down much of the economy. Members of Trump’s entourage refused to test positive at the Cleveland debate last week, just two days before him and his wife, wearing masks, Melania
The Presidential Debate Commission has stated that anyone who does not wear a mask will be “escorted”.
Together with the usual campaign insiders and VIPs, both candidates invited a handful of guests as symbols of their priorities. Pence invited the parents of Kayla Mueller, USA
According to authorities, he was tortured and sexually abused by Islamic State militants before he was killed in 2014
The Justice Department announced on Wednesday that two suspects of her death had arrived in the United States to be tried. Carl and Marsha Mueller said Obama’s administration should have done more to save them and voted for Trump in the August Republican nomination. Pence also invited business owner Flora Westbrooks, whose hair studio was destroyed in the Minneapolis riot after police killed the Black George Floyd, and Ann Dorn, the widow of a retired police officer who was involved in protests in St.
Louis.Harris invited Democratic State of Utah, Angela Romero, and Deborah Gatrell, a candidate for Salt Lake City Councilor and former military helicopter pilot who currently teaches
A press release said the campaign: “Both show the determination hardworking Americans showed when Donald Trump failed to control the virus and save the economy.”
