France will relax a temporary travel ban on the UK introduced after a new variant of the coronavirus emerged, the prime minister’s office said on Tuesday.
EU citizens and residents of EU countries are allowed to enter from Wednesday, provided they can show a negative Covid-19 test that is not older than 72 hours.
The tests must be of a type capable of detecting the new variant that has emerged in the UK, the office said in a statement.
People who “must make essential travel” will also be allowed into the country, it said.
France set its ban late on Sunday for 48 hours pending an EU-wide policy.
Sunday’s statement said: “Specific modalities for resuming freight traffic on the road will be announced in the coming hours.”
France’s temporary transport ban raised concerns that the UK could suffer from a fresh food shortage during a Christmas season already dampened by strict coronavirus restrictions.
