Indian captain Virat Kohli has revealed that he fought against depression on a poignant tour of England in 2014, where he felt like the “loneliest man in the world” after a string of bat failures. Speaking to former England player Mark Nicholas on his “Not Just Cricket” podcast, Kohli admitted that it was going through a difficult phase on the particularly difficult tour. “Yes, I did,” was his answer when asked if he had suffered from depression at the time. “It’s not a great feeling to wake up knowing you can’t score points and I think all hitters feel like you have absolutely no control over anything at some point,” he recalls.
Kohli had a disastrous tour of England in 2014, recording scores of 1, 8, 25, 0, 39, 28, 0.7, 6 and 20 in five Tests, averaging 13.40 in his 10 innings.
He roared back to form during the tour of Australia, scoring 692 runs in the Test series.
“You just don’t understand how to get over it. That was a phase where I literally couldn’t do anything to topple things … I felt like I was the loneliest man in the world,” he said of the England tour. . .
Kohli recalled feeling alone despite the fact that there were supportive people in his life. He said professional help was what he needed.
“Personally, it was a revelation to me that you could feel so lonely even though you are part of a big group. I won’t say I didn’t have people I could talk to but no professional to talk to. fully understanding what I’m going through, I think it’s a huge factor, ‘Kohli explained.
“I think I’d like to see it change.”
Considered one of the best hitters in modern cricket, the India captain believes that mental health issues should not be overlooked, as they can destroy anyone’s career.
“Someone you can go to anytime, have a conversation and say, ‘Listen, this is what I’m feeling, I find it hard to even go to sleep, I feel like I don’t want to wake up in de I have no confidence in myself, what should I do? ” said Kohli.
“A lot of people suffer from that feeling for a long time, it goes on for months, it goes on for an entire cricket season, people can’t get out.
“I have a strong need for professional help there to be very honest,” he added.
Kohli is currently in Ahmedabad for ongoing home test series against England. The two teams have each won a match and will take part in the third test from February 24.
