Twin knocks of 53 each by Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav helped Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Delhi Capitals (DC) and top the table in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. On the hunt for 163 for the win, Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma lost early to five, but a score of 45 runs for the second wicket between De Kock and Suryakumar followed by a 53-run partnership between Suryakumar and Ishan Kishan (28) pretty much accounted for an easy win for the four-time champions. There were a few hiccups in the end when Delhi hit to fire Suryakumar, Kishan and Hardik Pandya (0) in three overs, but the veteran duo Krunal Pandya (12 out of 7 balls) and Kieron Pollard (11 out of 14 balls) made Mumbai come home with two balls left.

Kishan hit 28 of just 15 with two fours and an equal number of sixes in addition to Suryakumar’s 53 of 32 as the middle overs brought Delhi just two wickets.

Rohit and de Kock had a tentative start to the innings, scoring 31 in the first five overs before the captain was fired by Axar Patel.

That was Patel’s only wicket of the innings, even when Ravichandran Ashwin and Marcus Stoinis got wicket each. Kagiso Rabada returned 2 for 28 from four overs, rejecting Suryakumar and Kishan.

Previously, Delhi skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to hit. Shikhar Dhawan scored with 69 off 42 balls to anchor the innings, even when Iyer (42 out of 33) was the support act.

Alex Carey, who played in the place of an injured Rishabh Pant, did not hit 14 out of 9 at death, along with Stoinis who made 13 out of 8.

Ajinkya Rahane, who played his first IPL 2020 match, made a run-a-ball 15 while Prithvi Shaw left cheap for four.

Promoted

Krunal returned 2 for 26 for Mumbai, while Trent Boult got 1 for 36 from their respective four overs.

With this win, Mumbai strengthened their position at the top of the table with 10 points from seven games – the same as Delhi, but Mumbai led the table with a better net run rate.
