It was a dramatic change of fortune for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 12 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 as they slumped to a tough 37-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Dubai. Rajasthan skipper Steve Smith won the toss and set KKR to bat. Shubman Gill’s 47 at the top and Eoin Morgan’s 34 at death helped KKR post a challenging 174/6. In response, Rajasthan lost Steve Smith (3) and Sanju Samson (8) cheaply and Sharjah’s hero Rahul Tewatia also lost to 14 as they were limited to 137/9.
The middle order failed miserably for RR on a day when their reliable top three failed. Jos Buttler was fired for 21 by Shivam Mavi, who was also in charge of Samson, in the first seven overs.
Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Mavi’s teammate of the 2018 Indian U-19 World Cup team, tore through Rajasthan’s middle order by firing Robin Uthappa (2) and Riyan Parag (1).
Tewatia was bowled by Varun Chakravarthy, who also got the great Jofra Archer for six, as Rajasthan failed to gain momentum in their pursuit.
Tom Curran resorted to some big punches from number 7, as he didn’t finish 54 out of 36 balls with three sixes, but it came too late for the 2008 champions.
All bowlers contributed for KKR as the trio of Mavi, Nagarkoti and Chakravarthy each got two wickets, while Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav each got a wicket.
Earlier, a cameo from Andre Russell (24 out of 14 with three sixes), who was promoted to No. 4, helped get KKR’s innings moving after Narine (15 out of 14) and Nitish Rana (22 out of 17) hit the big hits as often as they would have liked.
Karthik went cheap for one, but Morgan stayed to the end, helping push KKR’s total past the 170 run.
Archer started the race at a scorching pace, consistently crossing the 90mph mark, finishing 2/18 from four overs.
Ankit Rajpoot, Jaydev Unadkat, Curran and Tewatia each received one wicket.
