In Tuesday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) game between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, Robin Uthappa was spotted playing over in the third. As a precautionary measure against the coronavirus, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned the use of saliva to shine the cricket ball. However, players may use sweat as an alternative to shine the ball. The incident occurred in the third over when Uthappa dropped an easy flyout after opening batter Sunil Narine with a high shot in an attempt to clear the in-field.
A team can receive a maximum of two cautions per innings, but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-point penalty to the batting side, according to the ICC.
After KKR was asked to hit first, he made 174 runs on the back of Eoin Morgan’s well-made 34 of 23 balls. In the final over, Tom Curran gave away 16 points and enabled KKR to get past 170 points.
Meanwhile, the Royals started the chase on the wrong foot, as they lost skipper, Steve Smith, over themselves in the second.
Even Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler failed to attack the opposition as the batsmen wanted to rush things instead of holding the ends and taking the chase deep down.
In the end, Royals were limited to 137/9, giving KKR a 37-point victory.
