Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni must overcome his Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Virat Kohli counterpart for two reasons – for one, two essential IPL 2020 points. Second, the cool groom will certainly still want to show that he still trumps his junior tactically, who took over from him as skipper of India, a decision not necessarily popular with all MS Dhoni followers. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, also wants to show that he has the skills to outsmart Dhoni, which is easier said than done. But with both sides in relatively disadvantageous positions on the IPL 2020 points table, it would be enough to get two points and leave the bragging rights for later.
CSK’s at bat against Kolkata Knight Riders in their last game was inexplicable. From the culmination of a 10 wicket win over Kings XI Punjab, CSK fell into the depths of incompetence against KKR who really didn’t look like they were in the game until the CSK batters paved the way for them.
It was surprising that the KKR spinners were such a bundle for the middle order that includes Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Sam Curran, and Kedar Jadhav. The fact that Jadhav is getting the anti-aircraft defense is simply a reflection of the fact that Dhoni is above criticism.
But the truth is, he too struggled enormously and CSK lost a match they couldn’t lose.
As for RCB, they want to quickly forget the 59 point loss against Delhi Capitals. The Bengaluru side was played out no matter how you look at it. DC seems to have found a telling batting combo in their top and middle orders, and Kagiso Rabada is now leading a mean bowling attack, with the spinners getting more and more effective.
Devdutt Padikkal failed for once, and the rest was bad, bad enough to be limited to 137/9. Kohli tried to fight, but the hitting was generally ineffective.
Bowling kept working as best it could, since bowling to DC is nowhere near the easiest task in the current scenario.
There is no doubt that Dhoni is the stronger captain mentally. Kohli, despite all his bravado, visibly feels the pressure that can seep into his teammates. Dhoni, on the other hand, rarely lets his emotions come out, although it can be said that IPL 2020 has seen him a bit more animated.
Plus, he’s got a ton of veterans from Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo to Piyush Chawla. A serious “been there, done that” fate.
So when it comes to nerves, there is no competition. But Kohli can run down any side on his day, so don’t write this one off just yet. Anyway.
