IPL 2020, KKR vs RR: Shubman Gill played the anchor with an unbeaten 70 in KKR’s final match.© BCCI / IPL
Shubman Gill was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) leader group, as explained by head coach Brendon McCullum. At the age of 21, that’s an accomplishment to have and Gill thrived in the role too. A tempered 70 who failed to play against SunRisers Hyderabad in KKR’s final appearance helped the team record their first Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 victory. Gill now has his eyes on Rajasthan Royals, the only undefeated team in the tournament to date, and he warmed up for the match with a one-on-one match in the nets with assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, as seen in a video posted by KKR on social media.
The comparison Nayar gave to Gill was 16 runs from an over with two wickets in hand. While Nayar led the throwdowns at different lengths and speeds, Gill put up valuable death-overs batting practice.
There was subtle chatter between the two as to whether the shots hit in closed nets by Gill were going to be turned into boundaries or singles, and an aerial photo had Captain Dinesh Karthik’s stamp as a “SIX”.
KKR will take on RR in Match 12 of IPL 2020 in Dubai – both teams’ first match at the venue this season – and the longer boundaries and the resulting difficulty of hitting sixes could require someone to progress through the innings to play.
Gill played the part in the final game and the team would count on him for a repeat.
The U-19 World Cup winner has scored 854 T20 runs at 35.58 and hits the ball at 131.58.
