Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul has the right through the team manager’s report to notify the referee’s referee of Nitin Menon’s referee foul, and the Indian Premier League (IPL) board will then issue a call on the roar that saw Kings XI Punjab lose their opening match against Capitals of Delhi Sunday at the Dubai Cricket Stadium.
Speaking to ANI, an IPL GC official said the KXIP has the right to report the matter and it will then be addressed for review. He added that such mistakes are by no means good advertisement for the game.
“The process is for the team to report the matter through the captain and team manager. Then we judge it as the board of directors. The match referee also submits his report in which he can state the same,” said the referee.
When asked about the number of roars the competition has seen in recent years, the official said it should be removed and technology used in the best possible way.
“The referees really need to be aware of this. Mistakes like that, even if they happen at the highest level, are not good publicity for referee standards. Maybe it’s time to look into using advanced technology to help referees on line calls.
“Whether this would have changed what happened is hard to say as the stroke would have changed and Mayank hit the ball superbly and the stroke change could have thrown that out of gear.”
The incident occurred in the 19th over of Kings XI Punjab’s chase when Mayank Agarwal played one shot and took two runs. However, the umpire on the field, Nitin Menon, considered it a single.
Both teams scored 157 runs in the allotted 20 overs and the Delhi Capitals won the match in the Super Over.
Former cricketer Virender Sehwag, who himself represented Kings XI Punjab in the league, said the referee’s decision made all the difference in the match and that he should be ‘Man of the Match’.
“I don’t agree with the man of the match. The referee who gave this short run should have been the man of the match. Short Run, no. And that was the difference. #DCvKXIP,” tweeted Sehwag.
