The 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) players auction will take place on Feb. 18 in Chennai, the IPL tweeted Wednesday. The 14th edition of the competition is likely to be held in India after IPL 2020 was held behind closed doors in the UAE from September to November last year. Prior to the auction, the player retention window closed by teams on January 20 and several major players, including Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, and Aaron Finch, were released by their respective teams. Most teams preferred to keep their core, even though there were some compromises, such as Robin Uthappa, who joined Chennai Super Kings from Rajasthan Royals.

139 players were retained and 57 were released prior to the auction. Players such as Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga were without contracts.
While Harbhajan’s contract was not renewed by Chennai Super Kings, Malinga quit franchise cricket altogether.
Sanju Samson was appointed as the new captain of Rajasthan Royals following the departure of Smith, who led the team in IPL 2020. Rajasthan finished bottom of the table last season.
Mumbai Indians won IPL 2020 after beating Delhi Capitals in the final in Dubai. It was Mumbai’s fifth IPL title.
Other teams that have won the IPL more than once are Chennai Super Kings (2010, 2011, 2018) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2012, 2014).
