India pacesetter Ishant Sharma will play his 100th Test when India plays it against England on Wednesday at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. Ahead of the speed bowler’s milestone match, Captain Virat Kohli opened up about his relationship with Ishant Sharma, even narrating an incident from when the bowler got his very first call-up to the national team. “Ishant started playing state cricket with me. We used to be roommates for state cricket, Ranji cricket, for a long time,” Kohli said in a virtual press conference ahead of the third Test of the series against England.

When he was selected for India, he slept soundly in the afternoon and I had to kick and wake him up to tell him the news. That’s how far we go, ”Kohli said.

“We have great confidence between us. I am very happy that he has enjoyed his bowling over the years,” added the captain from India.

He also said it’s rare for a fast bowler to keep fit and show how tall Ishant can be – especially in the game’s longest format.

“Great achievement in modern cricket to keep your body as it has and play 100 tests, it’s rare, especially among fast bowlers,” said Kohli.

Kohli also said that Ishant could have prioritized cricket with limited overs, but has put his full focus on Test cricket.

India and England enter the third Test with a tie of 1-1 and a place in the final of the World Test Championship at stake.
