US President Joe Biden on Thursday called on the Myanmar military to “give up” power in the Southeast Asian nation and release the government officials and activists arrested in this week’s coup.

“There can be no doubt: in a democracy, violence should never try to override the will of the people or try to wipe out the outcome of a credible election,” said Biden in his first major foreign policy speech as President.

“The Burmese military should relinquish the power it has seized, release the lawyers and activists and officials they have arrested, lift restrictions on telecommunications and refrain from violence.”
