US President-elect Joe Biden received a Covid-19 vaccine live on TV Monday to help build Americans’ confidence in the bumps.

The 78-year-old new president received the Pfizer vaccine at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware. His wife Jill received the shot earlier, the president’s transition team said.

Biden told Americans “there is no need to worry” if they are vaccinated and that in the meantime they should continue to wear masks and “listen to the experts”.

They were the latest high-profile political figures to publicly join the first wave of vaccinations to halt a pandemic that killed nearly 318,000 Americans.

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife received vaccinations last week, but President Donald Trump has not yet participated in the action.

The Republican leader, consumed by conspiracy theories that his loss of the election to Biden was the result of mass fraud, cites the natural immunity he is believed to have after recovering from a coronavirus attack.

However, he has done little himself in terms of making statements to support the campaign to overcome Americans’ vaccine skepticism. His wife, Melania Trump, was also largely absent.

For Biden, who will be the oldest president to ever take office on January 20, it was the first shot in the Pfizer two-stage vaccine. He said he was looking forward to the follow up.

Biden praised “the scientists and the people who put this together – frontline workers, people who actually did the clinical work.”

He called medical workers “amazing and incredible”.

Biden also had rare praise for the Trump administration, which “deserves some credit” for overseeing the record-breaking development and production of vaccines.

But Biden, speaking through a double mask, warned that there was still a long way to go before vaccinations can really stop the virus from spreading.

“It’s worth noting that this is just the beginning,” he said. “It will take time.”

“In the meantime,” he said, “I hope people will listen to all the experts … and talk about the need to wear masks” during the vacation.

“If you don’t have to travel, don’t travel. It’s really important.”
