Washington, United States:
US President-elect Joe Biden said he was honored to work with Kamala Harris, who made history as the first wife and first daughter of immigrants to ever be elected to national office in the country.
“I am honored to work with an amazing Vice President – Kamala Harris – who makes history as the first woman, first black woman, first woman of South Asian descent, and first immigrant daughter to ever be elected to national office in this country will, “said Biden in his victory speech on Saturday night in Wilmington, Delaware.
“It is long overdue, and tonight we are reminded of those who have fought so hard for so many years. But once again America has bent the arch of the moral universe towards justice,” he said.
“Kamala, Doug – like it or not – you are a family. You have become an honorary candidate and there is no way out,” he said.
Biden, 77, and Harris, 56, would be sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States on January 20, 2021.
Harris, the daughter of an Indian mother and an African-American father from Jamaica, thanked Biden for choosing her as his runmate.
“What proof of Joe’s character that he had the audacity to break one of the greatest barriers in our country and choose a woman to be his vice president,” she said.
“But while I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last. Because every little girl who watches tonight sees that this is a land of opportunity,” Harris said.
Biden, she said, is a healer, a unifier, and a tested and steady hand. “A person whose own experience of loss gives him meaning that helps us as a nation regain our own meaning. And a man with a big heart who loves with devotion,” she said.
“We are so grateful to Joe and Jill for welcoming our family into their families on this incredible journey,” added Harris.
She will be the first female Vice President of Indian descent, the first Black, and the first African American Vice President of the United States.
