Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris said Sunday that President Donald Trump lives in “a different reality” as he denies that there is systemic racism in America.
“America’s reality today is what we’ve seen for generations, and frankly we’ve had two judicial systems in America since our inception,” Ms. Harris told CNN.
“I think Donald Trump and Bill Barr are spending full-time in a different reality,” said Harris, the first black woman on a big ticket to the US White House, targeting the president and his attorney general.
Joe Biden’s runmate spoke two days after the White House announced that Trump ordered federal agencies to stop funding anti-racism training for employees. This is “divisive, un-American propaganda” which suggests that the country is “naturally racist”. “”
And last week Barr rejected the idea that the United States actually has one justice system for whites and another for blacks.
“I think we have to be a little careful when throwing the idea of racism around,” Barr said. “I don’t think it’s as common as people think it is.”
Trump is working feverishly to address his largely white worker base with a tough law-and-order mantra as he wages an uphill battle for re-election amid a pandemic, troubled economy, and strained national reckoning of racial injustices in policing and others Areas of life.
Protests in major U.S. cities broke out after the death of African-American George Floyd in May by a white policeman in Minneapolis and flared up again last month after another black man, Jacob Blake, was repeatedly shot in the back by a white policeman in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Trump beat up such protesters as violent anarchists.
Harris insisted that peaceful protest is an American right and that racism is indeed anchored in the country.
“I don’t think most sane people, who pay attention to the facts, would deny that there is racial diversity and a law enforcement system that deals with racism,” said Ms. Harris.
She beat up Trump for botching the nation’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic that killed nearly 190,000 people in America, and not doing enough to help millions of people unemployed due to the global health crisis or otherwise suffer.
“There is no question that Donald Trump was a pathetic failure and incompetent when it came to dealing with the severe job loss resulting from the pandemic for not addressing the pandemic himself,” she said.
