North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a message to Donald Trump after the US president was diagnosed with corona virus and wished him a speedy recovery, the state media announced on Saturday.

“He expressed his condolences to the president and the first lady,” reported the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

“He sincerely hoped they would get well as soon as possible. He hoped they would surely get over it. He sent them warm greetings.”

The South Korean news agency Yonhap said it was the first time Kim had sent good wishes to a world leader who tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Trump announced in the early hours of Friday that he had tested positive for Covid-19. Later that day, he went to a military hospital for further observation and treatment.

Trump and Kim held three high-profile meetings beginning in June 2018 after tensions between Washington and Pyongyang intensified at the start of Trump’s tenure.

However, nothing concrete emerged on the denuclearization of Pyongyang, and talks have officially stalled for months.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in mid-September that talks were going on behind the scenes.

Trump has consistently portrayed his close relationship with Kim as one of his foreign policy achievements.
