A man has died after being bitten by a shark on a popular tourist beach on Australia’s northwest coast, authorities said on Sunday.
Police were called to a cable beach the morning after reports of the attack.
The man was pulled out of the water and given medical treatment, but later succumbed to his injuries.
“The police can confirm that the man tragically died,” police in Western Australia said in a statement.
Shark attacks are rare on Cable Beach, a 14-mile stretch of pristine white sand next to the town of Broome.
However, authorities are usually forced to close the beach once or twice a year if deadly saltwater crocodiles are discovered nearby.
The death of the man marks the eighth deadly shark attack in Australian waters this year.
According to the Taronga Conservation Society Australia government agency, there were at least 22 shark moles in the same period.
