Kaif, a right-handed middle order batsman, made his international debut in a Test against South Africa in March 2000.
He played 13 Tests and 125 one-day internationals for India in a career spanning more than six years.
Kaif is remembered for many punches and catches, but perhaps not as crucial as the 87 that failed to come out in the 326 chase against England in India in the tri-series final at Lord’s in 2002.
Together with Yuvraj Singh (69), Kaif put together 121 runs for the sixth wicket and helped India recover from 146 for 5.
India managed to win that game by two wickets with only three balls left and took the series in the process.
Kaif was part of the Indian squad that reached the final of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.
A reliable mid-order bat, Kaif finished his ODI career with 2753 runs at 32.01 with two centuries and 17 half centuries.
He made 624 runs of 13 tests at 32.84 with a century and three half centuries.
