MUMBAI, Oct.16 (Reuters) – England captain Eoin Morgan will take over as captain of Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders following the resignation of regular skipper Dinesh Karthik, the franchise announced on Friday.
The Knight Riders, coached by former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, are fourth on the points table with four wins and three losses and will meet the Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma later Friday in Abu Dhabi.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Karthik has managed to score 108 points in seven innings this season and informed the team that he wants to give up the captain position to focus on getting more points.
“It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to make a decision like this. Although we were surprised by his decision, we respect his wishes,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement. .
“We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who served as vice-captain, is ready to lead the team in the future.”
Morgan, who lead England in the 50 plus and Twenty20 formats, was bought by two-time IPL champion KKR in the auction ahead of the 2020 edition.
This year, the eight-team IPL is being held in the United Arab Emirates due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
