Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other high-ranking figures from the ruling party were arrested in a raid early this morning, the ruling National League for Democracy spokesman said on Monday.

The move came after days of escalating tensions between the civilian government and the powerful military, which sparked fears of a coup d’├ętat following an election that the army claims was fraudulent.

Spokesman Myo Nyunt told Reuters by phone that Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders had been “kidnapped” early in the morning.

“I want to tell our people not to act rashly and I want them to act according to the law,” he said, adding that he also expects to be arrested.

Telephone lines to Naypyitaw, the capital, were not available in the early hours of Monday morning.

A military spokesman did not answer calls for comments.

An NLD lawmaker, who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation, said another detainee was Han Thar Myint, a member of the party’s central executive committee.
