Devon Conway inspired New Zealand to a 53-run victory over Australia in the opening Twenty20 international in Christchurch on Monday. Conway hit an unbeaten 99 of 59 balls when the Black Caps overcame a shaky start and finished at 184 for five after losing the toss and getting hit. In answer: Australia was completely out for 131 after 17.3 overs, with Black Caps spinner Ish Sodhi taking four wickets for 28. two for 31.
But the tourists couldn’t dislodge Conway, whose 59-ball knock included 10 fours and three sixes, bringing the Black Caps back from 19 to three.
Australia suffered a horror show early in their innings, when seamers Tim Southee and Trent Boult tore through the top order.
Unlucky rookie Josh Philippe left for two after sending a top to heaven.
But longtime campaigners like skipper Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell also failed to tackle the swinging ball and the tourists were soon four to 19.
Mitch Marsh scored the highest score with 45 and Ashton Agar contributed 23 as a string of failed hitters gave New Zealand a comfortable victory.
