New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman BJ Watling is a questionable starter for the upcoming first test of the biweekly series against the West Indies. Kiwi head coach Gary Stead confirmed that Watling picked up a “hamstring minus” in the opening round of their domestic List A tournament and as a result Devon Conway has been called on to cover Watling, the ICC official website reported. . Conway was in great shape as he was the lead points scorer in the 2019 Plunket Shield season with 701 runs, including a spectacular 327 run-knock.

He is also the top scorer in the current Plunket Shield season with 410 runs against an average of 58.57.

If Watling is indeed excluded from the first test, Conway is expected to battle it out with Will Young for a place in the final XI.

According to the ICC website, Kiwi coach Stead also confirmed that the Blackcaps would call on Watling’s preparedness on the eve of the game.

If Watling misses the Test, Tom Blundell would keep the wickets for Kane Williamson.

The first test between the West Indies and New Zealand is scheduled for Thursday.
