US President Trump on Sunday defended his decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement, calling it “unfair and one-sided”, despite President-elect Joe Biden pledging to rejoin the landmark deal.

The United States officially left the 2015 Paris Agreement earlier this month, making it the first country to ever withdraw from an international climate pact.

“I withdrew the United States from the unfair and unilateral Paris climate agreement, a very unfair act for the United States,” said Trump on the sidelines of a virtual G20 summit hosted by Saudi Arabia.

“The Paris Agreement was not meant to save the environment. It was supposed to kill the American economy.

“I refuse to give up millions of American jobs and send trillions of dollars to the world‘s worst polluters and criminals, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Trump has campaigned aggressively for the fossil fuel industry, challenged the science of climate change, and weakened other environmental policies.

Trump, who refused to allow the bitter US elections, had given a one-year notice period to leave the Paris Agreement on November 4, 2019.

Biden has vowed that the US will rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement on his first day at the White House in January, which is welcomed by European leaders.

The U.S. President-elect has proposed a $ 1.7 trillion plan to bring the United States, the world‘s second largest carbon emitter, to zero by 2050.
