Sonu Sood Receives UNDP Special Award for Humanitarian Action

Actor Sonu sood, who has been hailed as a hero on social media for their efforts to send thousands of stranded migrants to their villages of origin during and after the closure, has been honored with the prestigious Special ODS Humanitarian Action Award from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The actor received the award in a virtual ceremony on Monday for selflessly helping stranded migrants during the coronavirus crisis by organizing food, buses, trains, and chartered flights for them and providing them with job opportunities to improve their livelihoods. The 47-year-old actor also offered his hotel in Mumbai for medical professionals to stay and organized safe shelters for several people in Mumbai before Cyclone Nisarga hit the coast of Maharashtra in July.

Other celebrities who have been honored with the Humanitarian Award by different UN bodies are Priyanka Chopra, Leonardo DiCaprio, Angelina Jolie, David Beckham, Emma Watson, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett, Antonio Banderas and Nicole Kidman.

A UNDP statement on the award given to Sonu Sood read: “The ‘Special Humanitarian Action Award’ awarded to Mr. Sonu Sood was awarded to him by the Planning Department of the Government of Punjab, with the support of the Coordination of Goals Sustainable Development Center. Awardees were selected on the basis of the recommendation of an independent jury. UNDP was not involved in the selection or presentation of the award to Mr. Sonu Sood. We congratulate Mr. Sood on receiving this award and thank your humanitarian efforts to help people in these challenging times. “

During the confinement, Sonu Sood even launched a toll-free helpline number so you can help those who needed assistance during the coronavirus crisis. He also reached out to a couple of members of the film fraternity who asked for financial help on social media.

Sonu Sood has appeared in various movies in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. He made his acting debut with the 1999 Tamil film. Kallazhagar and ventured into Bollywood with the 2002 film Shaheed-E-Azam. Sonu Sood is best known for his performances in films such as Dabangg, Yuva, Athadu, Jodhaa Akbar, Dookudu, Shootout at Wadala, Happy New Year Y Us, Among many others.
