Jan. 2 (Reuters) – South Africa’s fast bowler Dale Steyn has withdrawn from this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) as he seeks some time away from the sport.
Steyn was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the 2020 edition, which took place in the United Arab Emirates following the COVID-19 outbreak in India.
“Just a quick note to let everyone know that I made myself unavailable for RCB at this year’s IPL,” the 37-year-old wrote on Twitter.
“I’m not planning on playing for another team either, just to take some time out during this time. Thanks to RCB for your understanding.”
Steyn, who left testing in 2019 to extend his limited career, said he is not retiring and still hopes to compete in other leagues.
“I will be playing in other leagues, well spaced to give me the opportunity to do something that has excited me and to continue playing the game I love so much. NO, I am NOT retired,” he added.
Steyn had a disappointing 2020 IPL season, recording just one wicket in three matches as Bangalore finished fourth in the table before being knocked out by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the playoffs.
