Suresh Raina’s half-century and a triple effort by Bhuvneshwar Kumar were in vain as Punjab defended a modest 134 against Uttar Pradesh here on Sunday in their opening match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Punjab placed 134 for seven in a Group A match with opener and wicket-keeper Simran Singh scored 43 from 41 balls. Anmolpreet Singh (35 of 27) was another batsman who made a valuable contribution. Bhuvneshwar, who had to retire from the IPL with a thigh injury, was impressive in his comeback bout, returning three for 22 in four overs.
UP, however, fell short of the mark, finishing at 123 for five in 20 overs to lose by 11 runs.
Raina, who played his first competitive match in over 18 months, made an unbeaten 56 of 40 balls, but it wasn’t enough to get his team over the line.
The left-hander, who announced his retirement from Con on August 15 last year, had retired from the IPL for personal reasons after traveling to Dubai with the rest of the CSK squad.
